Our Curriculum

We have an uncompromising commitment to ensure that every child achieves their academic potential at The Ferrers School. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to secure the best possible outcomes for our students and to create well-rounded and cultured individuals. Meridian Trust has developed systems and capacity to support learning, the key elements are:

  • A dynamic curriculum that provides courses to meet the needs of every student;
  • High quality teaching and support through our House/Curriculum team structures;
  • Personal support for every student by their tutor;
  • Effective monitoring of student performance against challenging individual targets;
  • Robust support systems and flexible and effective intervention programmes.

Year 7 and 8 curriculum

Year 7 students at The Ferrers School will follow a curriculum designed to help settle students into secondary education. This means that they will study English, History, Geography, Religious Studies, PE, Music, Languages, Technology, ICT/Computing, Core studies, Science and Mathematics as their main focus for Year 7 and 8. Our setting structure for some subjects ensures that students are able to both enjoy and be challenged to progress rapidly. In year 8, students choose, with the guidance of their form tutors and parents, their GCSE option choices to follow in year 9 onwards.

Year 9, 10 and 11 curriculum

Students begin their GCSE studies in Year 9, which provides time to develop breadth and depth before taking examinations in Year 11.

Our guided choices programme aims to allow students to access the creative and technical subjects, such as Art, Business Studies, Computing, Dance, Drama, Engineering, Food & Nutrition, IT, Media Studies, Music and Sport , alongside a curriculum that focuses on developing students’ achievements in the core subjects: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Ethics and practical PE.

The essence of The Ferrers School’s curriculum is to ensure that every child achieves their maximum potential in the pursuit of striving for excellence across all subjects.

The outstanding classroom facilities within the school aim to ensure all students have access to the latest resources and technology within well equipped facilities.

Guided Preferences

This is the process of selecting your Key Stage 4 Subjects. This process begins in year 8 for commencement of courses in the beginning of year 9. This consists of an introduction assembly, a guided preferences evening followed by selection of courses.

A Meridian Trust Curriculum

Sixth Form

In 2023 we launched our own standalone sixth form, having formally been a part of a local consortium. As a new sixth form, we pride ourselves on providing a unique and enriching educational experience that prepares students for success in their future endeavours. Whilst the sixth form is new, it is built on an excellent tradition of student experience and examination success. We are proud of our students’ achievements, and year on year our students gain places at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge, as well as exceptional apprenticeship placements.

However, we believe that being in the sixth form is not just about gaining academic qualifications. We are dedicated to equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to thrive in their future. All our students follow a wide-ranging PSHE, careers and enrichment programme and all Year 12 students are encouraged to play an active role in the wider community.
