The Ferrers School Aspire, Achieve, Acclaim

Poor attendance and poor punctuality seriously affect the progress of students in school.  Research shows that if students miss 17 days a year, they can drop one GCSE grade.  The Ferrers School welcomes the support of parents in ensuring that students attend school regularly and on time.

Students who arrive late to school must sign in at Student Services.  Late arrival can also be very disruptive to learning and students who arrive late without an acceptable reason may be placed in detention.

    Reporting absence

Please contact Student Services before 10.00am on the first day of a student absence by telephoning 01933 354917, rather than Reception.  There is an answerphone out of office hours.  Please give the student’s name, form and a reason for absence.  A letter of explanation (or a note in the student’s planner) is required when your child returns.

    Holidays in term time

The current law does not give parents any entitlement to take their children on holidays during term time (Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013).  Any application for holiday leave must be in exceptional circumstances only and the Head Teacher must be satisfied that the circumstances warrant the granting of permission.  This decision will be based on the following:

    • The nature of the exceptional circumstances
    • The time of year when the holiday is due to be taken
    • The length of holiday and potential disruption to the child’s education
    • Any previous similar requests
    • The attendance record of your child

Holidays taken for the following reasons are not considered to be exceptional circumstances:

    • Availability of cheap holidays
    • Availability of desired accommodation
    • Overlapping with the beginning or end of term
    • Poor weather during the school holidays

Any holidays that are taken without permission in exceptional circumstances, will be coded as unauthorised, which will stay on the student record.

If you consider that you have an exceptional reason to be granted permission to take your child on holiday during term time, please request a pro forma from Student Services and return it for the attention of the Head Teacher, before making a booking.

The Governors are fully committed to supporting the School to raise standards of achievement and there is a strong relationship between good attendance and educational achievement.  A 10 day holiday will result in the loss of 50 hours of learning time, which can have a serious impact on progress. Good attendance is 95% and above; it is our aim for all students to attend at this level in order to have the best chance of success.  We ask parents to support us in this aim.
